Tapeworm in Humans: How much Do You Know?

Yes, it is the fact – there are also instances where the tapeworm even reaches the brain of a person and attacks it. Have you already heard about it? Or, even if you have heard about this, how much do you really know about it? There are several misconceptions about conditions like these as well. Are you sure that you too are not one among them who grow some wrong and foolish ideas about the conditions where the brain gets attacked by the tapeworm? This article precisely deals with such conditions where the tapeworm manages to reach the brain and thus cause some really serious threat to the person suffering from the tapeworm infection.

Cases where there is trace of tapeworm in the brain usually results from the pork tapeworm. Now, what is this pork tapeworm? The actual, scientific name of the pork tapeworm is Taenia solium. This Taenia solium usually comes in the body system of some human being from the intake raw or undercooked pork. The tapeworm remains in a larval stage in the pork meat – where it is called the cysticerci. As it enters the intestine of the human with food, it develops into the mature tapeworm.

Once it becomes adult tapeworm, it starts producing hundreds of eggs. This is the triggering point of the tapeworm infection in the human body. At this point we should note that it is not only through eating of uncooked or undercooked pork that this tapeworm may enter our system. It may also come from other agencies such as water that has been contaminated with the traces of this Taenia solium. Whatever the case be, on reaching the intestine and turning itself into the full grown matured tapeworm, it penetrates the wall of the intestine. After that, the tapeworm gets into the blood stream of the body as is subsequently carried to the brain.

The condition of the tapeworm reaching the human brain or eyes or several muscular tissues, and the subsequent illness is termed as cysticercosis. Now, you would need to have some idea regarding the severity of cysticercosis. The level of severity of cysticercosis in a human body depends on the parts or organs of the body where the tapeworm infection has occurred.

In many cases, for instance, there is the occurrence of cysticercosis in small proportion in body parts like the muscles or the liver. Usually they do not result in any major form of ailment for the infected person. They generally go totally unnoticed. If cysticercosis occurs in the voluntary muscles of the body, they may result in some body ache in some cases. On the other hand, even some irreparable damage may be caused to the person with the tapeworm infection if the cysticercosis occurs in some vital organs of the body in considerably high proportion.

Among the most threatening forms of cysticercosis are those in eyes and brain. Cysticercosis in eyes has resulted for permanent blindness in case of many people. When cysticercosis occurs in brain, it is called the condition of neurocysticercosis. There can be neurological damages to the person resulting from neurocysticercosis. It can also result in some form brain swelling in sever forms that may, in turn, cause even death of the person suffering from tapeworm infection.

Till date, a major part of the world has shown significant number of cases related to cysticercosis. Major among them are places in India, China, South East Asia, South America and Mexico. North America is yet to be affected in major proportions by the pork tapeworm. But, considering the threat that cysticercosis or this particular tapeworm infection may cause to humans, we need to be extremely cautious about them from the very outset.
